Most of these tanks will end up as scrap metal or displayed in military bases as "War Trophies". One thing's for certain, they are not fit for use, so they might end up in a traffic circle as a memento of the war.
Exactly. Even if they were fit for use, they will not be given to the new Iraqi Army. Look at what happened to Japan's army after WWII. If Iraq needs to fight any battles, history alone tells us who will be there to help fight it.
When the coalition forces invaded, there was not much of a fight once they got to Baghdad. The Iraqi Army abandoned their posts, surrendered, or went into hiding. Part of the rebuilding process was the collection of military equipment that was scattered throughout Iraq. This was the "collection point" where nearly all of them are stored. Some were still operational, and some were not. Most got looted for wiring and scrap metal by the locals before the coalition got to them. I am sure, at some point, they will be dismantled and recycled... and maybe some used as monuments. I know my unit recovered a land/water tank that we were going to bring back to Germany as a war trophy for our antique military vehicle collection, but it was oozing oil very badly, and we were responsible for cleaning all vehicles for redeployment home, so it wasn't worth the effort. We left it there.
